I have spent over thirty years in that seat, through every market disruption. Traditional media to mobile. The financial crisis. A pandemic. Now AI. Every one taught the same thing.
AI is making every organisation smarter: more data, faster analysis, better predictions. But the hardest decisions are rarely between right and wrong. They are between growth and efficiency, speed and rigour, innovation and risk. No system, however intelligent, can determine what should matter most, which trade-offs are worth making, or whose values should govern when they conflict.

As AI makes answers instant and infinite, the value shifts. It is no longer about having the answer. Everyone will have the answer. It becomes about discerning which answer is right, what actually matters, and what to trust.
Moving faster is not always the same as moving better. Imagine boarding the wrong train and telling yourself, it is fine, this one is quicker than the right train. A faster engine, pointed the wrong way, only gets you to the wrong place faster.
So the real work moves upstream, before the decision is made. Are we solving the right problem, and challenging the assumptions underneath it?
The deeper questions are about the person making the call. Successful and fulfilled leaders return to three, again and again: their identity, their influence, their impact.
